Like you, I encountered many moments when I faced negative emotions and feelings, leading me to be stuck. I called it negative momentum, where I can’t focus on anything, neither working nor taking rest. I was restless. Today, I share what helps me the most; let’s call it a process, a checklist of actions I developed in the past years to move forward.
What is telling you about the negative momentum you’re in?
First, let me share something with you about myself. This is the first blog article I’m sharing on this new website, after writing only in Italian on 12milavolte.com.
I went down the hole many times in my life, and after starting my career as a freelance and building my business, challenges became more frequent. If you’re an entrepreneur or freelancer, you already experienced that. You need to plan your day and be your boss every day, which means taking care of your emotional state first and keeping your mind focused on what needs to be done.
I’m not talking about productivity but expanding your conscious mind to be creative and letting your energy flow to be inspired to take the next step.
Where you are is precisely where you need to be. This means every moment has roots in something more profound, and by working on that, you can unleash your energy and create different emotions and different states of mind that help you stay positive and motivated. This requires training your mind every day; working with someone in a coaching relationship can genuinely help you around this.
But what about if you’re here searching for an answer straight away, or you want to build a new habit for every moment you feel negative and can’t be out of your mind?
I created this little process for you.
1. Feel the negative feeling
You might be used to listening to this expression and visualizing and feeling the feeling of already having what you want – positively. I’m here to tell you to allow yourself to feel the surface, even if it is a negative feeling or emotion. I ask you to feel deeply and stay there. You might want to cry, shout, or stare at the wall. So then be it.
2. Love what you feel
Then you might wonder how it could be possible to love something currently causing you all that suffering. I know you don’t like it, but you can love even something or someone who you don’t like. The beauty is in this: Loving that you don’t like how you feel, love what you dislike.
3. Detach the emotion from the thought that causes the emotions
Now I can tell you that your idea became an emotion; it’s already an emotion. But you can come back and see what causes the feeling. Be aware of the internal talking you gave to yourself, and catch the specific thought that brings that emotion. If you can’t find it, return to step number 2.
4. Detach yourself from that thought
That thought became your reality. Even if it is a thought about a situation and not directly about you. Still, it became your true. You might have searched for evidence you were right. You keep validating your thoughts, so that thought becomes you.
Who are you without that thought?
5. That thought is (already) passed
Even if you keep thinking about the same idea, it is already in the past. Or in the future. Means is something that is not here. Right now. Is it something that happened in the past or could happen in the future? Can you choose here instead?
6. Be open to be wrong
Uuuh, this is the most powerful part of this process. You are stubborn! – I am, too, by the way. So, no judgment, I’m not saying that you really are; you play the stubbornness card, so here, understand your pattern of being obsessed with that same thought. And I guess it is not your first time doing this with that thought. So then, are you willing to see the thought differently? And, of course, you say yes, but you don’t fully engage with my invitation to see it differently. So, be open for now. Be open to not knowing yourself; we are in the land of infinite possibilities right now.
7. Choose a different thought
This might not be easy, I understand. So I don’t want to push you above the limit; I want you to focus on being grate-FULL. Full of gratitude towards what you see around you. I want you to see them as it is, without an opinion about them; notice their presence in your life, in the life unfolding in front of you now.
Extra tip!
In doing this process, I encourage you to go out for a walk or move your body in any way. You can play some music if you decide to stay where you are and move there, or if you are in the middle of a situation and can’t leave, remember that you’re not a prisoner of any life; you can always go to the bathroom. Breathe in and out. Close your eyes and notice, and practice gently witnessing what is inside you. And if you are out, listen to the noise of nature around you. Find a place where you can cultivate a moment of silence. It’s pure gold!
I hope this blog post helped you!
